Obesity and Acid Reflux Precursors for Esophageal Cancer
01/28/2015
Experts from Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX) and University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine (Philadelphia, PA) published a review article in New England Journal of Medicine stating that adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, driven by obesity and acid reflux, has become the fastest rising cancer in white men in the United States.
The review details how daily and weekly symptoms of acid reflux, as well as abdominal obesity, increase a person’s likelihood of developing this form of cancer. Increased pressure causes the stomach to move upward, which can cause and exacerbate acid reflux symptoms.
